I am not so sure how I am feeling about Marching Band being a class for students next year. This year we had the summer and after school practices to get everything done for competitions and now how will we learn everything that we need in just 1 hour and a half for during school? There is just no way we can get it together before our competitions come around. Esp. now that we are getting people who havent even played an instrument before.....

Usually class is to learn music then marching band practice after school At east that's how we did it back in the day. It helped us to win state championships.

The last time Marching Band was a class was in 1996-97 school year. The downside was that we could only march 10-12 graders that year, so that cut out the 8th and 9th graders that we were marching.
The upside was we had 5 days a week @ 90 minutes per class to get it done! Quick math.... that's 7 1/2 hours of rehearsal a week. as opposed to the 4 hours we would get during our 2, 2 hour rehearsals the year before.
Other downside....dew in the early morning....it sucks. and getting sweaty before classes.

Speaking of class...why can't the band all wear the same style pants and shirts? Some shorts, some pants, etc. I'm sorry but it just looks awful.

B/C Twister.... That costs alot of money. I'm not saying that they can't get it close, but if I'm gonna ask kids to pay for something, it sure a heck won't be getting the same style khaki pants for the 1 or 2 games they might not be in uniform.
NOW, if they are in uniform and stuff looks bad, that's where we have a problem, but in September, it's just about getting on the field, getting comfortable with the surroundings and going from there.
If it makes you feel better, I make my kids tuck in their T-shirts before they go on the field. I did not inspect their black shorts to make sure they were all the same style though.

DCi The school has a uniform policy. All the kids own khaki pants so it's not like you would be making them go out and buy new.
I'm not talking about having the same name brand, heck, just have all of them wear shorts or all of them wear pants. Not some of each.
I am a graduate who spent 6 years in band. In HS we won state and finished 2nd twice in marching band competition.
Frankly we had to wear our band uniform from the 1st game onwards and stood inspection prior to be allowed to march. our director even checked shoes to see if they had been polished.
It's about pride. You know what they CLAIM the band is..."The PRIDE of ...".
