Is gymnastics a sport? Is dancing a sport? Yes, cheerleading is a sport. All the people who disagree are just jealous because they can't do the tumbling or routines. There are teams all over the world who perform in competition cheerleading. I think most people think cheerleading isn't a sport because of all the drama that goes along with it. But, what they don't realize is there is drama in every sport. Baseball players talk about the other players who can't hit or catch. Soccer players talk about the other team members who can't run or kick or play goalie. Drama is in every sport. You see more drama in cheerleading because its actually the girls doing all the complaining or whatever it is that goes on. In other sports, its the parents doing all the fighting. Everyone needs to admit that cheerleading is a sport. There is more involved with cheerleading than golf and golf is a sport. Who can't stand there and hit a ball that's on the ground? Try being thrown up in the air doing a flip and landing just right in the spotters arms.

Great points. I think this judgement is not so much based on people's definition of cheerleading, but more based on people's definition of a sport. Everybody needs to ask themselves, what makes baseball a sport? what makes football a sport? and then ask what criteria those sports meet that cheerleading does not.

simple. cheerleading on the sidelines, not a sport. cheerleading on stage vs other squads, is a sport.

simple. cheerleading on the sidelines, not a sport. cheerleading on stage vs other squads, is a sport. I can agree with that assessment. but overall, I do not consider it a sport. Too much personality. If you want to compete in dance, compete in dance. If you want to compete in gymnastics, compete in gymnastics. Cheerleading is more about popularity than about talent.

I wasn't going to get involved in this, but it's getting a little ridiculous. As an older brother of a cheerleader in college and the younger brother of a former high school cheerleader, I can tell you that what those girls put themselves through is above and beyond what many athletes go through. Do they compete? Yes. Is it athletic? Yes. Does it require talent? Yes. Does it require special training? Yes. Does it require practice to better themselves? Yes. Do all of these things apply to football? baseball? basketball? hockey? tennis? It sure looks like a sport to me.

Cheerleading is a sport. I was hoping most of you would back that idea instead of use this thread to down cheerleading. It's a real shame.

Cheerleaders are dancers who have gone retarded. - Sparky from Bring It On Not appropriate for this thread. Some of you need to grow up. There is no reason that cheerleading should not be classified as a sport.

simple. cheerleading on the sidelines, not a sport. cheerleading on stage vs other squads, is a sport. cheerleading on the sidelines and cheerleading on stage is just that -- cheerleading -- a sport. Whether these girls are competiting against another squad or cheering for their high school "oh so great" football team, they still have to practice their routines just like football has to practice their plays. There are so many things I can name here that can make cheerleading a sport just like any other sport.
