As creepy as it sounds, you are not truely safe anywhere. You can't live your life in fear of what may happen. At best, all you can do is take as many precautions as possible in order to keep yourself safe. I believe RSHS as well as the other Richmond County schools have taken as many steps as it can to keep you safe. Take notice of warning signs and report anything disturbing.

if all of this is because of that Virginia tech shooting, i must agree about the warning signs. that guy was screaming for help.

Kount is right on. You can't spend all your time worrying about what may happen to you, because you will most likely end up causing something else to happen to yourself. Just be smart.

The year I graduated from Richmond, 3 students died. Two were suicides and one killed in a car accident on senior day. I wish kids were smart enough to seek help when something is bothering them that bad. When I was in 9th grade at Hamlet, a very good friend of mine starting acting all weird. I never reported it, but fortunately, someone else did. After talking to a counselor, they decided to check out his locker. They found several weapons, no guns, but knives, and several martial arts type weapons, as well as a lot of racially hate material written on the walls and door. I never really knew what happened with that, but I know it was a long time before I saw him again. You never know what something like that could have elevated to.

Great thread! It's a scary thing. I go to St Andrews and we have been doing a lot of discussion about campus safety since the Virginia Tech shooting. raiderfan06 summed it up best in 3 words. Just be smart.

They've been talking about it at UNCP and Fay State as well. I'm sure most colleges around the country have been updating their violence and disaster plans.

Umm....what was going on today? I have not heard.
As far as safety goes. I've been locking my classroom doors this past week. Not because I feel unsafe, but because when something like this happens, often times there are copycat offenders. 4/20 is also the anniversary of Hitler's birthday and Columbine, so naturally the nutjobs come out of the woodwork.
There is nothing you can do to prevent these events from happening with the exception of reporting erratic behavior. Never assume someone is joking if they mention doing something like this. Always assume the worst....and if they are truly joking.....they'll only get a trip to the office. Don't be the one that regrets later by saying "I shoulda said something"
Alot of cases, school shootings are not perpetrated by crazies wanting to kill everyone, they are attacks on specific individuals. The shooting at Richmond Senior in 1993 was a perfect example of this. A guy went after someone else over a gold chain. Shots were fired. Still....everyone was put in danger. You cannot anticipate these things happening. You just have to hope for the best.
As far as safety in the classroom.... In every class you take....plan your escape route. I know in the bandroom, I'd have been the first guy through those backdoors into the locker room. Downstairs D Pod.....broken windows to the outside. A pod downstairs.....head thru the back office spaces behind the classrooms. The only places that really suck are upstairs D, A, and B pods. ......fight back
